7/21/2023 0 Comments Cactus music series![]() When JD McPherson called us up and said he was interested in producing our record it was the latest in a series of serendipitous events that have brought us to where we are today. It always stretches us out and makes us feel lucky as hell. We just got into some music from a different era and happened to make it our own.Įvery step of the way we’ve had the good fortune of being offered an opportunity that seems just beyond what we’re ready for. That’s how the wheel got going and gave the illusion of spin Not everyone could tell what was new and what was old, and it didn’t really matter. Over the course of our year and a half at the Turf Club our repertoire had snowballed into an amalgam of original songs and a bunch of gut wrenching, “tongue-in-cheek” heartbreakers, that were 30 years older than us. It was our first chance to play all night and do whatever we wanted. Paul, Minnesota, so we got a band together and it became our weekly “practice-in-public” where we would pull out every song we could think of, no matter how well we knew it. Early on, we were offered a residency at the Turf Club in St. We cut our teeth performing some well known and obscure country songs that were popular or unpopular pre-1960, partly out of curiosity and deep appreciation, but mostly because it was fun. When my brother and I started making music as The Cactus Blossoms there wasn’t a big plan. A cast of characters, experiences, and personal perspectives set in simple rhymes and sung in harmony to paint a picture in your mind. It is the culmination of several years of songwriting and the kindness of thousands of miles and friends. ![]() Our new album, You’re Dreaming, didn’t happen overnight.

The museum has created new and daily series that is available on and across MOCA’s social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. The museum hopes to keep the mural up for a few years, and then use the building as a canvas for “another amazing piece of art,” says Byrne. With MOCA’s temporary closure, we wanted to offer you a virtual way to stay connected and build community. While some art can be intimidating to the uninitiated, Byrne says the public has responded well to the mural it has even served as the backdrop for a few wedding party portraits. People want to be close to it, they want to take a picture of it.” “Maser’s work is very much rooted in art history and design, but it’s also personable. “He started doing it illegally-tagging walls, creating these secret projects-but now, he’s commissioned to make art all over the world,” explains Byrne. It was really fun, other than the 90-degree heat.”īyrne says Maser’s origin as a graffiti artist influenced the museum’s decision to work with him. “Then, the MOCA staff and some artists here in Virginia Beach worked alongside him. “Maser was on site with us for two weeks last July,” says Byrne. Maser, who is MOCA’s current artist-in-residence, painted the mural last summer. “We wanted a huge, dynamic block of color and pattern to get people to look at our building, and to immediately know what we were all about,” says Byrne. Sporting wide swaths of bright colors, lines and angular shapes, it’s no accident that the mural is painted on the back of the MOCA building facing I-264. Visitors may walk inside the sculpture and interact with it in a tangible, unusual way. The other two components are an entertainment stage, which Maser recently completed, and a three-dimensional sculptural installation, finished in the spring. “The mural is actually part of a three-part project we’re doing in partnership with the Virginia Beach Office of Cultural Affairs, and the ViBe Creative District,” Byrne explains. The mural, created by Ireland-born artist Maser, is part of a series of works designed to pique the public’s interest in the city’s evolving art identity, says Alison Byrne, MOCA’s director of exhibitions and education. The geometric patterns covering the exterior of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Virginia Beach came to bear through one artist’s vision and a community’s collaboration. The Maser mural, painted on the back of the MOCA building, faces I-264 in Virginia Beach. ![]() ![]() Rather, they are the necessary evidence or fruit. Lest the reader get tripped up by his use of prepositions here, Schreiner is careful to clarify that good works are by no means the basis or meritorious instrument of the believer’s salvation. His chapter is titled, “Justification apart from and by works: at the final judgment works will confirm justification” (71). Schreiner in turn represents a standard Reformed view of the relationship between justification and final judgment. In other words, we ought to be critical realists. But there ought to be a dynamic and mutually-correcting interplay between our presuppositions and our interpretation of the data. Now of course we should acknowledge the role that our presuppositions play in how we interpret the data. But as Schreiner accurately observes, this makes Wilkin’s reading “unfalsifiable” at the presuppositional level (55). Every biblical passage raised against his reading is given a harmonizing reinterpretation, even to the point of special pleading. Second, Wilkin is so committed to his premises that there seems to be no way of correcting them. If this assumption is incorrect, then the whole superstructure of his argument collapses. First, his position rests critically on the assumption of a certain version of dispensational premillennial eschatology. The weaknesses of his position can essentially be reduced to two points (both of which are recognized by the other contributors). However, the sheer number of biblical passages marshaled against his view should make one wonder whether he is operating from fundamentally mistaken premises. Wilkin is to be commended for his determination to protect the doctrine of justification by faith alone. To defend this view, Wilkin devotes a great deal of space to answering biblical objections (33-47). By contrast, there will be only one verdict at the Great White Throne Judgment: condemnation. While some may be disqualified from ruling with Christ, no one at this judgment will be disqualified from final salvation. The former takes place before Christ’s millennial reign on earth and determines which believers will be rewarded for their perseverance and good works. 5:9-11), and the Great White Throne Judgment (for unbelievers Rev. Given this premise, Wilkin distinguishes between two eschatological judgments: the Judgment Seat of Christ (for believers 2 Cor. Wilkin concurs: “Many would agree that there is a necessary connection between believing in Jesus and obeying his commandments. These theologians have taught that the moment of faith at a believer’s conversion is decisive for salvation, and thus commitment, obedience, and perseverance are not necessary for eternal life. To get a better sense of this view, one needs to see it in the context of the “Lordship salvation” controversy that began in the 1980’s with the writings of “Free Grace” theologians like Charles Stanley and Zane C. Wilkin’s chapter represents a somewhat more idiosyncratic view: “Christians will be judged according to their works at the rewards judgment, but not at the final judgment” (25). This dialogue thus sets the stage for the four contributors of this volume: Robert N. These scholarly disagreements within Protestantism have more recently been brought to the public eye through the ongoing dialogue between American pastor John Piper and British New Testament scholar N. From the time of Martin Luther in the sixteenth century to the New Perspective in the twentieth century, there has been no shortage of divergent views. Stanley writes the introductory chapter, which helpfully summarizes the biblical evidence about the final judgment, the role of faith and grace in salvation, and historical developments within Western Christianity regarding these points. With the rise of the New Perspective on Paul in recent years, these questions have yet again come to the fore, making this volume a timely contribution to the discussion. But Protestants have differed among themselves over how to relate the believer’s obedience to the final judgment. While Roman Catholic theology has traditionally reserved a role for human merit (albeit based on God’s initial grace), Protestantism has consistently denied such a role. How are we to resolve this tension while respecting the authority of all of Scripture? It is a dilemma that has divided not only Protestants from Catholics, but also Protestants from Protestants. Scripture consistently holds two seemingly contradictory truths in tension: we are justified by grace through faith, and we will be judged according to our works. The voice actors do a good job of making Nicole and Irving interesting, the former a kind of a caricature of a strong independent bitch who needs no help from nobody (who can blame her?), and the latter a kind of extremely nice nervous dork, the sort of person I'd describe as a wetty. Similarly, you find tools that have a specific purpose (a Polaroid camera that you use when the lights go out, or a parabolic mic to track spooky noises) but each is only used once, in one set piece, and so they end up feeling spare. There are isolated pockets in the building where you busy yourself most often - the apartment, the offices, the basement - but in between are corridors of empty rooms that you can't enter, which might as well be blank space. You, as a player, are one step removed from the uncanniness when creepy things start to happen. ![]() The Timberline doesn't, because you don't feel at home in a hotel by definition, even if Nicole does. Gone Home works because you know how to navigate a family home. Where Gone Home lead you naturally through the empty house as you discovered new things, The Suicide Of Rachel Foster leads you by the nose, partly because, though the Timberline is a nice vision of gently spoiling grandeur - the Miss Havisham's wedding cake of hotels, but with a bit of The Shining flavour - it's a lot bigger than a house. And there isn't a voiceover telling us that - it's just something to look at and understand. Leonard's thinking had, we can infer, changed over the last decade. But around his bed you find tomes about ghosts, and how to talk to the dead. The apartment where Nicole's dad lived out his mouldering last days in a likewise mouldering hotel, for example, is full of books about physics, the stars, and space. The Suicide Of Rachel Foster is actually really good at that, too. I'll forgive a lot for a mystery where I noodle around an empty building full of sweet, sweet environmental storytelling. Irving is unreasonably invested in Nicole's plight, for reasons you eventually discover. She's not entirely isolated, however, as she has an early mobile phone that lets her speak to Irving, a FEMA agent stationed nearby. Nicole, back at the Timberline to inventorise and sell it after the deaths of both her parents, ends up investigating this piscine odour - this whiff of trout - while she's trapped there for a few days during a snowstorm. So far, so titular - and obviously, there turns out to have been something fishy about Rachel's death. It seems she probably died on the same day that Claire and Nicole left. Shortly thereafter Rachel went missing, and was found a few days later at the bottom of a cliff, with a note indicating she had taken her own life. Ten years before the events of the game, Nicole and her mother left suddenly, and never returned, after it was discovered that Leonard was having an affair with the 16-year-old Rachel. They ran the hotel and lived there with the teenaged Nicole, while Leonard was tutoring local girl Rachel Foster, and by all accounts it was a pretty successful set up. You play as Nicole, a grown woman now returning to the Timberline, an old mountain hotel that belonged to her parents, Claire and Leonard. Then, in the last half hour or so, it goes properly off the rails and the content warning is proven necessary. It's a decent enough first person explorey mystery along the lines of Firewatch or Gone Home, but, you know, not as good as either of those. I would have said that about The Suicide Of Rachel Foster too, at least based on the bulk of the game. There are sensible ways to deliver content warnings, and a game signposting that it is extremely serious business in massive white letters on a black background usually means that, in reality, the contents of it are pretty milquetoast. Normally these feel a bit like grandstanding. If you couldn't tell from the title, The Suicide Of Rachel Foster makes sure you know it's about proper issues with one of them big content warning screens up front. ![]() Just add image files (supports JPG, BMP, PNG, TIF, TGA, GIF formats) to the list and click the Convert button, this.
